Why Are Solar Setup Costs Dropping?
Over the years, solar setup costs have continued to drop. There are many reasons why they are becoming more affordable for a customer to install. Below are some of the primary causes for the increasing return-on-investment value.
Increased Panel Efficiency
Solar panels are more efficient than they were years ago. As technology advances, solar panels are creating more electricity than before, allowing you to cover more or most of your electric bill on the same amount of panels. Overall, increased panel efficiency leads to lower costs for the consumer.
Economy of Scale
As the solar industry continues to grow, the supply chain grows with it. Costs of producing solar panels and other components are going down because the materials to make them are becoming easier to procure. This lowers the cost of production as well as make the market more competitive, which tends to drive prices down as more companies compete for customers.
Better Batteries
Technological advances also affect batteries. If you have battery backup, better batteries increase the amount and the efficiency of storing electricity. This allows you to install fewer batteries for the same amount of storage for your setup. Fewer batteries means lower costs for better batteries.
Government Incentives
The federal government has incentivized homeowners to convert to solar by approving a tax credit to claim the year it is installed. In the past, the Residential Energy tax credit gave a tax credit of 30% of the total cost of the solar setup cost, including the supplies and the labor to install it. In 2022, Joe Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act, which extends this credit until 2032. If you install a system by 2032, you will still be able to apply for the Residential Energy tax credit.
For more information, see the article Homeowner’s Guide to the Federal Tax Credit For Solar Photovoltaics on the Department of Energy’s website. If you already installed a solar setup, see the IRS Form 5695 Residential Energy Credit form to apply for the credit.
